Course overview

Standing on one leg is a purposeful training task requisite for key daily pursuits including gait, curbs, stair climbing, tub/shower transfers, and lower body dressing performed in a standing position. Outside of ALD, unilateral stance is unavoidable in many occupational, recreational, and sport pursuits. It is therefore quite reasonable for therapists to include single limb stance within a treatment program. This course presents key information, found also in ULS: A Neuromuscular Marker, concerning the postural control framework and kinematics of unilateral stance to better appreciate the sensory and motor components integral to postural control when balancing on one leg. Explore the wealth of research concerning single limb stance as a training exercise within a broad Unilateral Stance Progression. From pre-unilateral stance tasks (i.e.bipedal tasks, semi-tandem tasks, etc.) to static and dynamic unilateral stance tasks, care is taken to define and explore this exercise sequence continuum through the lens of research. This course also examines the research to determine the impact of fatigue on unilateral stance performance. Therapists including standing tasks within a therapeutic exercise and/or home program will benefit from this timely, evidence-based update.
