Saturday Vestibular and balance dysfunction oftentimes leads to falls are often costly and traumatic indicators of a dysfunction that could be successfully controlled with an evidence based, patient centered comprehensive vestibular rehabilitation treatment program. If left undiagnosed and untreated, statistics indicate balance related falls account for more than one half of the accidental deaths in the elderly. Moreover, even individuals with a diagnosed symptomatic vestibular problem have an incidence of falling that is 12 times greater than that of the general population. The material presented in this course ranges from intermediate to advance and is applicable to multiple clinical setting ranging from acute to home to SNF to outpatient. This new interactive vestibular workshop will cover the functional anatomy and physiology as well as the pathology of the vestibular and balance systems across neurologic, orthopedic, and cognitive domains. Emphasis will be placed upon formulating a working differential diagnosis for central and peripheral mediated vertigo. Additionally, equal focus will be placed on understanding how to assess and treat BPPV arising from anterior, horizontal, and posterior canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis. Guided by breakout hands on labs and case scenarios, you will utilize and examine evidence based assessment and intervention tools that are designed to effectively manage patients with easy and straight forward diagnosis to those who have difficult to diagnose complex deficits which severely impair function. The instructor will disseminate information from clinical practice guidelines CPGs for both Peripheral Vestibular Dysfunction and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo that will assist you in your practice. Sunday It is a common place for the rehab clinician to work with patients in a clinical setting with a significant mix of UE, and LE patients requiring exercise intervention for various injuries and stages of recovery. For the rehab clinician there are many exercise interventions to consider open chain, closed chain, manual, stabilization, balance, mobility, isometric, eccentric, and concentric exercises need to be understood for optimizing recovery in the operative and non operative patient. Terry Rzepkowski, DPT, MS, BS, has many years of experience in progressing the rehab patient through exercise in the acute and repair phases of recovery in a variety of settings from acute care and home care to outpatient and return to sport activities. Many factors can influence which exercises are most appropriate including age, injury, surgery, stage of recovery, goals, and patient compliance. Learn techniques and principles that will help guide your through a solid exercise progression for your patients to optimize their functional recovery. You will have more confidence in your practice and exercise interventions after attending this intensive exercise course.
