Course overview

Discussion of providing culturally responsive care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities including definitions of commonly used terms, three ways to create a positive environment and safe space for LGBTQ patients, and why some LGBTQ patients may experience challenges in accessing medical care. LGBTQ patients are often subjected to bias from healthcare providers, which may create barriers and challenges in this population seeking and receiving medical care. Members of the LGBTQ community are one of the largest underserved populations in healthcare settings, and at an increased risk for a number of health disparities. Some of these disparities may often be the result of inadequate knowledge of the healthcare professionals caring for these patients. A goal of many healthcare organizations is to provide sensitive and equitable care for all individuals, including those in the LGBTQ community, requiring increased understanding and education for nurses regarding how to best care for and communicate with these individuals. This program discusses culturally sensitive care and communication for the LGBTQ community to ensure best health outcomes for this population.
