More than 1.2 million people in the United States and Canada suffer with hope-robbing, independence-depriving effects of aphasia despite millions of dollars spent on research, treatment, and public awareness of the problem. Therapy for patients with a nonfluent aphasia usually involves: behavior modification, cognitive therapy and pragmatic skills, butoften fails to help these patients regain verbal communication. This course discusses acquired apraxia and the treatment philosophy and rationale while keeping in mind the optimal exploitation of neural plasticity.
