Course overview

Only 57% of people with diabetes have well-controlled blood glucose levels ¿ defined by the American Diabetes Association as a three-month target blood glucose level (hemoglobin A1c) of less than 7% or defined by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists as less than 6.5%. For some people with diabetes, help may already be here in the form of the daily or weekly dosed glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonists exenatide (Byetta, Bydureon), liraglutide (Victoza), dulaglutide (Trulicity), albiglutide (Tanzeum) and the amylin analog pramlintide acetate (Symlin). Many nurses and dietitians who work with patients with diabetes will have the responsibility of educating and monitoring patients who are using these important new treatments.
