Interprofessional Rehabilitation of People with Executive Function Impairmenta

Course overview

Executive function impairment may accompany a variety of medical conditions, including traumatic brain injury; dementia; and other progressive neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer disease. The ability of patients to achieve goals, including rehabilitation goals, may be compromised by executive function impairment. Carrying out activities of daily living, ambulation, and even eating can be made more difficult by problems with initiation, inhibition, judgment, and other aspects of executive function. Difficulty complying with medication schedules may be one of the most serious consequences of executive function deficits. Nurses and rehabilitation therapists must understand executive function to modify interventions and work with all members of the rehabilitation team to optimize patient outcomes.
