Systemic Effects of Cocaine

Course overview

According to the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 1.5 million Americans age 12 and older reported using cocaine. In addition, an estimated 601,000 are new users. Cocaine has a tremendous impact on the central nervous system, constricting blood vessels, increasing heart rate and blood pressure, which can contribute to myocardial infarctions and strokes. Additional negative systemic effects result with cocaine use. This educational activity will address cardiovascular and pulmonary effects of cocaine use as well as the management of cocaine intoxication.
