RX/NP Objectives 1.Describe the pathophysiology, risk factors, and screening methods for osteoporosis. 2.Discuss guideline recommendations for osteoporosis prevention and treatment. Compare bisphosphonates, denosumab, parathyroid hormone analogs, romosozumab, raloxifene, and estrogen in terms of effectiveness and adverse effect concerns. 3.Counsel patients regarding the importance of calcium and vitamin D intake and the dosing options/appropriate administration of medications used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. Tech Objectives 1.Name five drug classes that are indicated for the prevention and/or treatment of osteoporosis; recognize the brand and generic name(s) for the medication(s) in each class. 2.For each medication used to prevent or treat osteoporosis, describe the recommended usual dose and how it should be administered. 3.List the common side effects, safety concerns, and contraindications for medications used for the treatment of osteoporosis.
