Course overview

One of the greatest joys in life is birthing a baby, but pregnancy itself is a challenging experience. In addition to the commonly associated difficulties, there are often significant effects that pregnancy has on oral health as well. The primary purpose of dental treatment during pregnancy is to improve the overall oral health of the patient in a manner that is safe for the mother and fetus. Even though most every pregnant patient will have challenges that may affect her oral health and possible dental treatment, such unique circumstances should not prevent healthcare professionals from knowing the risks and benefits of a woman undergoing certain procedures. Once a patient's medical history is properly reviewed, the obstetrician will be able to determine whether a woman should progress with dental treatment or postpone the procedures until after pregnancy.
