Ethical & Legal Issues in Supervision

Course overview

Supervision draws upon knowledge and skills that go beyond those of psychotherapy. Similarly, the ethics and legal imperatives regarding supervision both encompass psychotherapy issues and go beyond them. Because supervision is a triadic rather than a dyadic relationship, the supervisor must always attend to the need for balance between the counseling needs of clients and the training needs of the counselor. It is important for the supervisor to remember that ethics call the supervisor to a standard of practice sanctioned by the profession while legal statutes define a point beyond which a supervisor may be liable. This six hour training will equip those who are considering or have already entered into a supervisor or leadership position with a base knowledge of how to approach a variety of ethical concerns that are often related with the position. Participants will discuss the ethical issues inherent in counseling which include emerging ethical standards in counselor supervision, supervisory relationship vulnerability and codes of ethics applicable to supervision, and ethical concerns that are common to supervision.
