Pediatric Common Procedures Part 2

Course overview

Pediatric ED care has evolved over the past several decades; the focus now is minimizing pain and distress for the pediatric patient during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. There are many factors involved in the ability of the patient or their caretaker to cope and cooperate with a procedure. Therefore, ED nurses must be equipped with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill and deliver safe, high-quality, family-centered care. In this activity, we will cover comfort positioning and the most common clinical procedures related to emergency procedural care and management of the pediatric patient. We will also review procedural sedation. After completing this activity, practitioners should be able to: describe common safety comfort and positioning strategies used by the healthcare provider to minimize movement in the provision of atraumatic care; describe common factors to consider in preparing pediatric patients and their families before undergoing an invasive procedure; discuss nursing roles and responsibilities in procedural sedation; and explain the significance of family presence and caregiver assistance in the care and management of the pediatric patient during procedures and sedation.
