Course overview
Addiction is an inability to stop or withhold from consuming a substance that has, thus far, been beyond the person's control to avoid. It causes an intense desire to use again and again, despite any negative impact on the person's health, family, work life, social life, and sense of self. This course will look at types of addiction, including recent studies of compulsive behaviors that have become culturally accepted as 'addictions', such as food, sex, gaming, shopping, and media and internet addictions. It will provide information on the various expressions of addiction, the variables that impact why some become addicted to a substance or compulsive about a behavior while others do not. The course will also look at the impact of addiction and some treatment modalities.
