Policy Statement

Continuing Education Credit Designation

This educational activity is credited for 2 hours at completion of the activity. Pharmacology content is 0.5 hours (30 minutes).

Statement of Learning Need

Members of the obstetrical health team should be able to identify anticipated and abnormal health outcomes during the postpartum period. Physiological changes that occur during the postpartum period require knowledge by obstetrical nurses who assess the postpartum women and newborn to determine care needs. Complications arising during the postpartum period need to be swiftly identified and treated. Risk factors should be considered in the determination of whether a provider is called and during the development of a nursing care plan. 

Course Purpose 

The purpose of this course is to ensure that nurses working in obstetrics have the knowledge to perform correct assessments and meet the needs of postpartum mothers and their newborns. 

Target Audience

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Registered Nurses, and other Interdisciplinary Health Team Members.
