Course overview
The use of herbal medicines to aid in healing maladies has been documented since 2500 B.C. and continues to be used today. The use of herbal medicines is considered part of the branch of medicine known as complementary and alternative medicines (CAM). According to data collected by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2007, 38.3% of adults used some form of CAM; of that number, 17.7% of adults reported using herbal medicines. Since 2015, the use of at least one herbal medicine in the USA has increased to 35%. This increased use of herbal medicines is correlated with a spike in the increased prevalence of side effects, contraindications and national recalls of conventional medications.
