Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder. It is a behavioral, cognitive, and emotional disorder that is characterized by hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and inattentiveness. The signs and symptoms of ADHD can cause significant difficulties in a patient's social, academic, or occupational life. Pharmacotherapy is the primary treatment for children older than 6 years of age who have ADHD. The drugs commonly used to treat ADHD are stimulants such as amphetamines (lisdexamfetamine) and central nervous system stimulants (methylphenidate), as well as non-stimulant drugs such as atomoxetine, guanfacine, and clonidine.
