Discussion of medical errors and TeamSTEPPS, including the most common safety issues found in occupational therapy, the role of teamwork and communication skills in creating a culture of safety, and TeamSTEPPS tools and strategies that can improve patient safety. Discusses medical errors in primary care, including classification of medical errors and additional types of errors; the five most common errors in occupational therapy and their impacts on occupational therapists; managing and preventing medical mistakes by adhering to a just culture; the American Occupational Therapy Associations (AOTAs) Code of Ethics, including core values, and principles and standards of conduct; explains team strategies and tools to enhance performance and patient safety (TeamSTEPPS), including skills and communication; explores case study on failure to disclose a wheelchair fall, including AOTA Code of Ethics and TeamSTEPPS tools that can be utilized.
