Improving Care to Prevent Suicide Among People with Serious Mental Illness

Course overview

Course Description: This 6 CE course on suicide assessment and prevention is designed to meet the license renewal requirements for several states. This course is based on the proceedings of a national workshop that has been peer-reviewed and published by the National Academies of Science. The workshop presentations and moderated discussions will examine opportunities to prevent suicide among people with serious mental illness (SMI), including, at minimum, bipolar disorder, major depression, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder, as well as mood, anxiety, or other disorders that result in significant functional impairment. The goals of the workshop include: highlighting the patterns of mortality by suicide among people with SMI, reviewing the implications of the relationship between SMI and suicide, and examining interventions that can reduce the high risk of suicide in this population. The workshop will also consider ways to: improve and implement early interventions, improve access to care among vulnerable populations with SMI, and effectively target interventions to specific populations with unique needs. This course on suicide assessment and prevention is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge of suicide assessment and prevention. The course material includes a review of interventions. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
