Sesamoiditis: Pushing off From Pain

Course overview

The term sesamoiditis most commonly refers to inflammation and swelling of the soft tissue structures in the region of one or both sesamoid bones of the forefoot. These regions include the medial and lateral heads of the flexor hallucis brevis tendons, in which the sesamoid bones reside, as well as the metatarsophalangeal joint capsule. Due to many associated factors, patient variables, and differential diagnoses, sesamoiditis is often misdiagnosed and overlooked. However, it can be both painful and debilitating. It is important for physical therapists to understand how to recognize and treat this condition.
