Course overview

Human coronaviruses were first identified in the 1960s, and there are several types of coronaviruses that can infect people. Coronaviruses usually cause mild and self-limiting illnesses, such as the common cold. However, the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is not the same as other coronaviruses that commonly circulate among humans, and has created a global public health emergency. COVID-19 has affected over 700,000 individuals in the United States alone, and information regarding COVID-19 is ever-changing and evolving daily. Nurses and many other healthcare providers are working on the front lines caring for individuals with COVID-19, and must be well educated regarding best practices surrounding COVID-19, including clinical manifestations and how to protect themselves from COVID infection, minimizing potential transmission to others. This program provides a review of coronaviruses, including COVID-19, including history, risk factors, transmission, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and immunity.
