Course overview

The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to expand their knowledge of the pathophysiology of stroke and provide safe and appropriate nursing care in the emergency and acute care settings. It is estimated that one in every 20 deaths in the U.S. is caused by stroke. This makes it more important than ever for nurses to work for the prevention as well as the early recognition and treatment of stroke. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1.Discuss the incidence and prevalence of stroke. 2.Review the anatomy and physiology of the brain. 3.Differentiate among the different types of stroke. 4.Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of stroke. 5.Explain risk stroke mimics and stroke chameleons. 6.Review risk factors for stroke. 7.Describe The Joint Commission standards for stroke center certification. 8.Explain management of acute stroke.
