Course overview

The number of older adults worldwide is rapidly increasing, and while compared with younger adults, there is a lower percentage of depressed elders, depression continues to be a major public health concern for older adults. Early detection is the key in improving care for these patients, which requires health professionals, including nurses, to be cognizant of the specialized needs of the geriatric population. By educating nurses and practitioners about risk factors, barriers, associated medical conditions, protective factors, suicide risk, assessment of geriatric depression and anxiety, and treatment options, better patient outcomes will be achieved.
