This education program provides information about practical strategies to enhance professional communication and improve team functioning in the actual work setting. The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to: 1) enhance their ability to communicate effectively in order to advocate for patients, families, and themselves; and 2) improve their teambuilding skills. --Purpose Statement: Errors in health care cost millions of dollars each year as well as countless loss of life. Good and clear communication is a key to the prevention of medical errors and helping to ensure a healthy work environment. This course focuses on practical strategies to the improvement of both verbal and non-verbal communication. Objectives: 1.Explain how appearance can influence professional communication. 2.Describe effective non-verbal communication strategies. 3.Demonstrate effective verbal communication strategies. 4.Describe de-escalation techniques for defusing anger and agitation. 5.Explain strategies for effective written, telephone, and social media communication. 6.Examine communication techniques associated with medical errors. 7.Describe how communication failures contribute to medical errors. 8.Discuss the incidence and prevalence of various types of workplace bullying. 9.Identify effective strategies to defuse workplace bullying. 10.Discuss effective team building strategies in healthcare.
