Course overview

According to the American Nurses Association, “Nurses whose practice specialty focuses on the intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) population face specialized challenges and opportunities. This unique client population is present in all communities and healthcare settings, and caring for them requires the specialized expertise of nurse practitioners” (2013). The mission of the Developmental Disabilities Nurses Association (DDNA) is “to continually develop our expertise to assure the highest quality of life for the people we support throughout their lifespan” (2016). In addition, the goal of the DDNA “is to foster the growth of nursing knowledge and expertise about optimal care of persons with IDD, thereby improving their care, services, and quality of life” (2016). In order to uphold the goals and mission of these organizations and provide best patient outcomes, continuing education for nurses and practitioners regarding how to appropriately assess and care for these individuals is essential.
