Joint attention is a crucial skill that is the basis for social and communication development. When joint attention is improved, it has a positive effect in areas such as language, expression, and social skills. Joint attention deficits are one of the most common characteristics observed in young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Because practitioners play an important role in the early recognition of autism spectrum disorders, it is essential that both nurses and practitioners are aware of and able to recognize the signs of autism spectrum disorders, including joint attention. By educating nurses and healthcare practitioners regarding joint attention in relation to early recognition of ASD, appropriate interventions may then be initiated, resulting in better patient outcomes.
