Course overview

The American Nurses Association has long estimated that misuse of chemical substances among nurses parallels that of mainstream society. Research indicates that nurses with substance use disorder often begin misusing drugs, including alcohol, before completing their nursing education. This behavior can make an entire work group dysfunctional, both before and after discovery. Use of labels, such as "impaired" and "addicted," can result in stigmatization and criminalization of the behaviors, making it more difficult for nurses to seek help or for their peers to report them for intervention. This activity will help nurses to recognize and support colleagues who may be suffering from substance use disorder while protecting patient safety and addressing their state's continuing education requirement on recognizing impairment in the workplace.
