Course overview

Growing evidence indicates that executive functions (E.D.) are affected and are often the main concerns in clients with specific language impairment. The problem is that many of the standardized language test scores are not designed to capture the executive function deficit delays and the language scores look normal. Executive functions are the key elements in optimal life long learning and everyday skills. This presentation reviews applied approaches to understanding and managing the cognitive symptoms that are frequently observed in clients with executive function disorder. Clinicians working in a variety of educational and health care settings will be provided with an update on (a) the multidimensional cognitive constructs of attention, memory, and executive functioning, (b) common meta-cognitive deficits in clients with speech-language disorders, (c) tools and procedures for assessing the cognitive abilities of clients, and (d) approaches to remediating or compensating for the cognitive problems of this client populations.
