Course overview

One of the most commonly abused substances that healthcare professionals deal with on an ongoing basis is alcohol. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put annual visits to EDs due to alcohol at 136.3 million. Alcohol is commonly associated with violent crimes, auto accidents and a multitude of medical illnesses. This class will present information on alcohol’s historical prevalence, statistics, and effects on the body systems. We will also go into the unique scenarios faced in an Emergency Department environment as it relates to acute and chronic alcoholism.
