Course overview

Orthopedic conditions and injuries affect huge numbers of Americans; many will present to the ED with acute injuries such as fractures, while others will present with chronic conditions such as back pain. According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), approximately 52 million adults have been diagnosed with arthritis, and an additional 35 million have experienced pain, aching, or stiffness in or around a joint. Understanding musculoskeletal assessment, fracture types, complications, and treatment modalities for different types of fractures is essential for any nurse working in an ED. Considerations for the geriatric and pediatric populations related to musculoskeletal system can be challenging and complicated. Good, effective communication with the patient, families and ED staff is imperative to manage these patients accurately and efficiently.
