Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder. It is a behavioral, cognitive, and emotional disorder that is characterized by hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and inattentiveness. The signs and symptoms of ADHD can cause significant difficulties in a patient's social, academic, or occupational life. In some cases, ADHD may persist into adulthood. Although the age of onset of ADHD under the DSM-5 must occur during childhood, there are clinicians who question whether this disorder may arise for the first time during adolescence or adulthood. A major feature of ADHD symptoms observed in the general population is its heterogeneity.
