Course overview

Discusses importance, impact, and key components of multidisciplinary rounds, and rounding tools and processes' impact on communication outcomes. Many hospitals currently demonstrate inconsistent processes, lack adoption of reliable rounding tools, lack measurement of organizational impact of multidisciplinary rounding, and failure to incorporate reliable interdisciplinary rounding processes/practices. Multidisciplinary rounds have proven to be a valuable tool in improving the quality, safety, and patient experience of care. Some of the benefits that hospitals have experienced as a result of multidisciplinary rounds include reduced length of stays, reduced central line days, and increased coordination of care. Research has shown that interprofessional collaboration is important because the quality of care that is provided by the hospital staff is directly affected by how members of the healthcare team communicate and interact with each other, and poor communication has a negative impact on patient outcomes. Because reducing patient length of stay and preventing re-admissions is a goal of healthcare organizations, it is crucial for all disciplines to function as a team, identify barriers to discharge, and develop a plan to overcome these barriers. This program addresses the importance of multidisciplinary rounding, and how nurses and other healthcare providers can effectively contribute to multidisciplinary rounds, achieving better patient outcomes.
