Course overview

Target Audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to improve their nursing skills regarding recognizing, treating, and facilitating recovery in those who have substance use disorders. Course Overview: Abuse, dependence, and addiction are world-wide problems that have serious impact on all facets of society. This course offers information about the various types of substance use disorders and their treatment, and includes nursing actions important to the treatment and facilitating recovery from these disorders. Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the learner should be able to: 1. Discuss the incidence and prevalence of substance use disorder. 2. Describe the pharmacologic treatment of substance use disorder. 3. Distinguish between substance abuse and substance dependence. 4. Describe the psychopharmacotherapy for specific substances. 5. Discuss the diagnostic process for intoxication. 6. Explain treatment measures for intoxication. 7. Describe the clinical presentation of withdrawal for specific types of drugs. 8. Explain the medical/legal pitfalls when working with patients going through withdrawal. 9. Describe the types of disorders that can be substance/medication induced.
