Target Audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses working within the emergency department who interact daily with patients presenting with substance abuse and toxicologic emergencies, environmental emergencies, and disasters. Course Overview: This emergency nursing course covers two key topics. Substance abuse and topologic emergencies are an every day occurrence in the emergency department. Likewise, having the know-how in environmental emergencies and disasters is a key to successful patient care. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 1. Identify the various substances and agents that can result in a toxicologic emergency. 2. Compare and contrast the side effects of the various substances and agents that could have been ingested. 3. Differentiate the interventions that will need to be taken with the various substances and agents that could have been ingested. 4. Identify the various types of animal or insect bite reactions. 5. Compare and contrast the side effects of the various animal or insect bite reactions. 6. Differentiate the interventions that will need to be taken with the various animal or insect bite reactions. 7. List the potential contagions that can result in a disaster response. 8. Compare and contrast the side effects of the various contagions associated with a disaster. 9. Differentiate the interventions to be used with the various contagions associated with a disaster.
