Course overview

Discussion of the application of appropriate treatment guidelines for patients experiencing atrial fibrillation (AF); treatment considerations for individuals experiencing AF postoperatively, during pregnancy, or as a result of another medical condition; comparisons of the outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) versus surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR); and a summary of preparation, patient education, and post-procedure management for patients undergoing TAVR. An estimated 2.7-6.1 million Americans are currently living with atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia, which can lead to blood clots, stroke, and heart failure. This number is expected to increase with the aging U.S. population. AF is likely to be the most common reason a patient will require anticoagulation following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). AF costs the U.S. approximately $6 billion annually and contributes to an estimated 130,000 deaths each year. Despite the fact that AF doubles the risk of heart-related deaths, and is associated with a five-fold increased risk for stroke, many people are unaware that AF is a serious condition. Multiple factors must be taken into consideration when determining appropriate treatment for AF. This program discusses best practices and clinical guidelines in the treatment of AF for medical professionals in order to promote better patient outcomes.
