Course overview

Opiate use overdose has been identified as a primary cause of death. Naloxone is available for acute opioid overdose or emergency. It is also useful in a maintenance program in a take-home form. Take-home naloxone requires training in the prevention of overdose. Naltrexone has been proven to be a safe, effective, and well-tolerated treatment for patients who have opioid use disorder. Treatment with naltrexone requires patients to withdraw from opioids before naltrexone therapy can be initiated. For patients who complete opioid withdrawal and detoxify, naltrexone appears to be an effective long-term treatment option for opioid use disorder. No Test Required!
