Course overview

Target Audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to work with patient to help reduce and/or prevent urinary incontinence in older adults. Course Overview: Urinary incontinence (UI) affects more than 17 million adults in the United States and is most often defined as the involuntary loss of urine sufficient to be a problem. In addition to being a common geriatric syndrome, UI significantly affects health-related quality of life. This education program provides information to help nurses discuss the etiologies of urinary incontinence, perform a thorough nursing assessment for urinary incontinence in hospitalized older adults, collaborate within the interprofessional team to best assess and document types of urinary incontinence, and develop an individualized plan of care for an older adult with urinary incontinence. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES On completion of this course, the reader should be able to: Discuss the incidence and prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI). Discuss transient and established etiologies of urinary incontinence. Describe factors to be included in a nursing assessment for UI in hospitalized older adults. Describe the core components of a nursing assessment for UI in hospitalized older adults. Discuss the importance of nurse collaboration within the interprofessional team in an effort to best assess and document the type of UI. Develop an individualized plan of care for an older adult with UI.
