Target Audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to improve their skills pertaining to the assessment and management of pain in the older adult population. Course Overview: The prevalence of persistent pain is a common problem among older adults. It is estimated that many of community-dwelling older adults and a majority of older adults who live in nursing home experience persistent pain. Despite its wide-spread prevalence, pain is under-diagnosed and under-treated in older adults. This education program provides information that will help nurses to improve their assessment and management of pain in the older adult population. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES On completion of this course, the reader should be able to: Discuss the prevalence of pain. Discuss the importance of effective pain management for older adults. Describe the best methods of assessing pain. Discuss pharmacological and nonpharmacological strategies for managing pain.
