Parkinsons Disease is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects 1.5 million people with an additional 60,000 new diagnoses made annually. Over 85 percent of the diagnoses are made in individuals over age 50. With the Baby Boomers increasing in age, Speech and Language Pathologists need to be ready to treat this population. The presentation of the disease is individualized and multifaceted, including both motor and non motor symptoms. It is unpredictable and complex, with progression leading to increased disability. Parkinsons Disease moves through Stages and has impact on cognition, communication, voice and swallow function. This course will provide you with a foundational understanding of the etiology of PD and its subsequent effect on function. It will introduce the tools you need to address each of these above domains during the stage progression. You will have up to date information on the best evaluation and assessment tools for this population. You will learn about recent, evidence-based treatments for cognition and voice. You will develop confidence in understanding the role of the SLP in leading coordinated team treatment of patients with Parkinsons and Parkinsons plus Syndromes. Objective Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: State the Scope of Service of SLPs working with Patients with Parkinsons Disease ie, Cognitive, Communication, Swallow, Voice and Language Demonstrate knowledge of at least 2 evidence-based treatments for cognitive deficits associated with Parkinsons Disease Identify effective direct and indirect treatments for patients with PD Demonstrate knowledge of evidence based treatments for voice impairments associated with Parkinsons Disease Identify key components of care provider home care staff training for effective carryover of cognitive communication strategies or safe swallow strategies.
