Target audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to enhance their nursing skills when caring for the older adult who has experienced a fragility hip fracture. Course overview: The global incidence of fragility hip fractures continues to rise on an annual basis making it one of the most common causes of hospital admission following trauma for older adults. This injury can be overwhelming for both patient and family, often resulting in permanent disability and increased reliance on others. Nurses are in an optimal position to make a significant difference for patients who suffer a fragility fracture. This education program provides information that will help nurses to provide quality nursing care for those older adults who have experienced a fragility hip fracture. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES On completion of this course, the learner should be able to: Discuss the impact of fragility hip fracture on global health care systems. Describe methods to assess bone health and fracture risk. Identify common complications associated with care of older adults with fragility hip fracture. Articulate specific nursing management strategies to address common complications. Discuss fracture liaison service as a process for secondary fracture prevention.
