All staff working in the long term care setting will increase their knowledge and skills in caring for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: 1 - Explain the importance of the philosophy of care, physical environment (indoor and outdoor), security, and safety in the care of the person with dementia. 2 - Describe the importance of schedules and routines and your role as a caregiver. 3 - Describe issues and concerns of family members of a person with AD as well as the grief process and the ongoing losses that occur as the disease progresses. 4 - Discuss strategies for assisting family members to be involved with persons in dementia care programs. 5 - Describe causes of stress for the caregiver and discuss strategies and techniques for managing stress.
