Course overview

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, especially the colon and ileum. It is commonly diagnosed in the late teens to early twenties and it occurs equally in men and women. Crohn’s disease is named for the gastroenterologist Burrill Bernard Crohn who coined the disease in the 1930’s in New York. The disease may be referred to as regional enteritis. There is no known cure for Crohn’s disease. Symptom management, in the hopes that the person will go into remission (periods of little to no symptoms), and remain in remission for lengthy periods of time, is often the goal of therapy. Improving the person’s quality of life is essential.
