NUR149 - Influenza: The Basics

Course overview

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses, primarily Types A and B. Influenza A viruses can be broken down into sub-types depending on the genes that make up the surface proteins. Over the course of a flu season, different types (A & B) and subtypes (influenza A) of influenza circulate and cause illness. This course will discuss flu symptoms and treatment as well as how to manage an outbreak in long-term care facilities. The course will also touch on transmission from person to person and complications that can arise from the flu virus.
