Course overview

In the United States, there are an estimated 1 million cases of shingles each year. Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV).VZV is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body. Usually it does not cause any problems but sometimes it reappears years later, causing shingles.
