Course overview

Shock is a clinical syndrome marked by the inability of the body to meet its own oxygen needs. Shock can originate from a wide range of causes including overwhelming infections, myocardial infarctions, and traumatic injuries. Early recognition and intervention are key to preventing a cascade of events that can lead to multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and death. An integrated team of nurses, providers, and allied health personnel is crucial for proper management. This module will provide an overview of shock as well as one of the potential sequelae of untreated shock coagulopathies (specifically disseminated intravascular coagulation [DIC]).
