Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mental health condition characterized by extreme mood fluctuations, including episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression. Previously known as manic-depressive disorder, BD can severely impact an individual's ability to function in personal, professional, and social settings. The disorder is estimated to affect 2.8% of the U.S. adult population, with symptoms typically emerging in late adolescence or early adulthood (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2022). For healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, understanding BD is crucial in providing effective, compassionate, and evidence-based care. Due to the stigma associated with mental illness, many individuals with BD may delay seeking treatment, leading to worsened symptoms and increased risk of substance abuse, self-harm, and suicide. Nurses play a pivotal role in early identification, patient education, and treatment coordination, ensuring that individuals receive comprehensive, patient-centered care. This course will explore the symptoms, challenges, and nursing interventions necessary for supporting patients with BD while addressing the impact of the disorder on families and caregivers.
