36018 Caring for Transgender Patients
Tracking # 20-648314
Course overview
Discussion of patient’s rights and recommendations for transgender patients, the unique needs of transgender patients in healthcare settings, and standards of care. Aging poses unique challenges for older transgender adults, and with a growing older transgender population, there is a critical need to understand the challenges that can threaten financial security, health, and overall well-being. Some of the common issues that transgender older adults face include a lack of cultural and clinical competence regarding transgender people and their health needs, bias and discrimination by providers, barriers to quality care, and weaker support networks. In addition, transgender older adults who may often rely on resources that provide services such as meals, transportation, and legal help, often find that these services are ill-equipped to provide competent and nondiscriminatory services. This program discusses healthcare considerations for transgender patients in healthcare settings, including patient’s rights, unique needs, recommendations, and standards of care.
