Course overview

Audience This presentation is geared toward all nurses that are interested in healthcare innovation and have patients who use the internet to find health information. Purpose Statement The explosive growth of the internet followed by the rise in popularity of social media over the last two decades has undoubtedly changed healthcare in America. The evidence is clear: a majority of patients are looking online for health information before they are showing up in our exam rooms and hospitals. About six-in-ten Americans say they sought health information online in the past year, accounting for millions and millions of online health searches that are only projected to grow. This internet game-changer has invoked mixed feelings among the healthcare community and has left many nurses wondering how to navigate patient care in light of the rapid advancement of online information available at every patient’s fingertips. What impact does this new online world have on the profession of nursing? And more importantly, how can nurses better help patients use the endless possibilities of the online world to improve their health? By sharing the story of www.kidnurse.org, this webinar will discuss the powerful ability that nurses have to share evidence-based health education online, improve patient outcomes and satisfaction, and publicly elevate the profession of nursing. Helping patients sort truth from myths to find accurate health information online, as well as legal guidelines and considerations for nurses to keep in mind will also be discussed. Join us as we discuss how to navigate this brave new online world together. Learning Objectives At the end of this presentation, the attendee will be able to: • Assess the understanding of the current consumption of online health information by patients today • Discuss the benefits and potential drawbacks of patients finding online health information • Explore ways to teach patients how to find accurate health information online and improve their online health literacy • Identify current guidelines for nurses writing information online • Examine how embracing online innovation can be a powerful tool for advancing the nursing profession
