Target audience The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to increase their skills in caring for long-term care residents with high-risk cardiac complications. Course overview Approximately 5 percent of the older population lives in nursing homes, congregate care (in an assisted-living environment with meals and special services provided), assisted-living, or board-and-care facilities. This is expected to increase to 25 percent as people age and have additional comorbidities. With the growing aging population, nurses in all areas, but particularly in long-term care (LTC) facilities, will need to be familiar with gerontology and the subtle presentations of health-care problems, including cardiac status, in this age group. The goal of this continuing education offering is to provide nurses with current information about caring for long-term care residents with high-risk cardiac complications. Objectives Upon completion of this course, nurses should be able to: -Distinguish normal cardiac changes in the older adult versus disease process. -Identify specific cardiac diagnoses that may go unnoticed in the older adult population. -Evaluate how polypharmacy may lead to cardiovascular complications in the older adult.
