Course overview
In 2021, the U. S. recorded 1 death by suicide every 11 minutes (CDC Suicide Data and Statistics, 2021). While males, comprising 50% of the population, but account for nearly 80% of U. S. suicides, are followed by the following groups: people 85 and older; the Non-Hispanic AI/AN population; non-Hispanic whites', Pacific Islanders, multiracial, black and Hispanics; and finally, non-Hispanic Asian groups. Members of sexual and other groups considered minorities are also at higher risk. Unsurprisingly, firearms are used in more than 50% of reported suicides. For clinicians conducting a suicide risk assessment, Assessing Suicide Risk covers these and other statistics, in addition to statutory mandates in Florida for clinicians serving those considered to be at risk of suicide. Guided by our professional codes and liability concerns, our goals for 491 Board clinicians taking this course are to provide you with essential tools for use, to focus on client interventions via a range of Rapid Assessment Instruments (RAIs), or tools to identify presenting client characteristics and behaviors linked to potential suicidality. After identifying client issues and profiles, we move toward facilitating and quickly developing viable treatment plans for persons at high levels of risk of suicide. With a focus on measures that are easily accessible in the public domain, readily available to you at little to no cost, quickly administered and provide training (most include video and/or written instructions.) A Case Study is included as a practice tool, to enrich client assessment and to strengthen future case planning. We profile information on each assessment tool using a brief written profile, and identify developers, plus, provide links to the measures.
