Course overview

Target audience: The target audience for this education program is nurses who want to improve their assessment skills when evaluating patients with cough. Course overview: According to the most recent National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey in 2013, a chief complaint of cough represented around five million visits to the emergency department per year (Rui, Kang, & Albert, 2013). It is imperative that nurses are able to thoroughly and accurately assess cough. This course provides information about the clinical significance of cough, how to assess patients who present with cough, and how to facilitate the diagnostic process pertaining to cough. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, nurses should be able to: -Explain the clinical significance of cough. -Evaluate key features of the patient’s history. -Discuss the differences and differentials in the two patient exams. -Work through the differential to facilitate diagnosis.
