Course overview

Audience: This course is for New York licensed, registered, or certified health care professionals to ensure that they understand how blood borne pathogens may be transmitted in the work environment. Course overview: This course includes the mandatory elements for New York health care professionals. It reviews how blood borne pathogens may be transmitted in the work environment. The course includes the 2018 updates related to Element VII, which is sepsis, and follows the syllabus for infection control and prevention issued by the New York State departments of health and education. OSHA standards and CDC guidelines are also incorporated throughout the course. Learning objectives: -Identify five examples of scientifically accepted practices for infection prevention and control for airborn, droplet and contact transmission. -Define health care-associated disease transmission, as well as engineering controls and safe injection practices used to enhance practice for infection control. -Identify work practice controls designed to eliminate the transmission of blood-borne pathogens related to the use of sharp instruments. -Recognize indications and situations requiring the use of barriers and personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to potentially infectious material. -Identify appropriate barriers and personal protective equipment for prevention of exposure to potentially infectious material. -Give four examples of non-critical, semi-critical, and critical medical devices for infection control. -Identify the health professional’s responsibility for maintaining a safe patient-care environment in all health care settings, including nurses in leadership roles, according to New York law. -Describe the NYS Sepsis Improvement Initative and identify at least three signs and symptoms of sepsis. -Relate six strategies for the prevention of blood borne pathogen transmission by means of effective and appropriate pre-cleaning, chemical disinfection and sterilization of instruments and medical devices.
